A hospital in Monterey County, California welcomed its last baby of 2021 into the world, followed shortly by the first baby of 2022 – and they were twins!

According to a press release shared by Natividad, Alfredo Antonio Trujillo was born at 11:45 p.m. on December 31st, 2021, and his twin sister, Alyin Yolanda Trujillo, was bron at 12 a.m. on Jan 1, 2022.

Being twins is rare enough. Being twins born on different days is even more unique. Being twins born in separate years is virtually unheard of.

The babies’ mother, Fatima Madriga, couldn’t be happier about the news of her babies. In the press release, she said, “It’s crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays. I was surprised and happy that [Alyin] arrived at midnight.”

Natividad stated in the press release:

“There are about 120,000 twin births in the U.S. every year, making up just over 3% of all births. However, twins with different birthdays are rare, and some estimate the chance of twins being born in different years as one in 2 million.”

While the circumstances of the birth are certainly unique, a similar case happened at the end of 2019. According to WTHR, twin siblings from Indiana, Joslyn and Jaxon Trello, were born in different years and different decades. Josyln was born on New Year’s Eve in 2019, while her brother, Jaxon, arrived in the early moments of January 1st, 2020.

Dr. Ana Abril Arias was one of the doctors who helped oversee the delivery of Alfredo and Alyin. She said in the press release, “This was definitely one of the most memorable deliveries of my career. It was an absolute pleasure to help these little ones arrive here safely in 2021 and 2022. What an amazing way to start the new year!”

The two babies have three older siblings, two girls and a boy. Naturally, the boy was excited to welcome another boy into the family, and all of them are excited to welcome their baby siblings home!
