A mother in Texas has given birth to three babies after successfully battling the novel coronavirus.
The mother, named Maggie Sillero, found out that she had tested positive for COVID-19 when she was already 28 weeks pregnant with the triplets.
Sillero didn’t show signs and symptoms of COVID-19 when she went to The Woman’s Hospital of Texas in Houston on May 8. However, her physician considered her high-risk given the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
The new mom was admitted for observation at first and her then unborn babies were also being monitored throughout the final weeks of her pregnancy.
When she was tested for the coronavirus, she didn’t expect that the result would come out positive since she had not left her house since March. Later on, her husband was also tested and he, too, was positive and asymptomatic.
“When I got the news, it was very shocking. I could not believe it,” Sillero said in an interview with CNN.
Sillero disclosed that her other family members who were staying with them in their house were also tested for COVID-19. Fortunately, her mother and her 5-year-old son, Alexander, tested negative for the virus.
Sillero had to stay in the hospital after her diagnosis and she was tested regularly. On June 4, she received a negative result, indicating that she was already free of the novel coronavirus.
However, she was not able to celebrate the good news since after her ultrasound that same morning, it was found out that her umbilical cord was wrapped around the neck of one of her babies. That afternoon, all three of her children, two boys and a girl, were delivered via a Caesarean section.
“Luckily, everything came out good. The doctors were amazed at how well the babies were doing as soon as they were born,” Sillero said.
Siller’s husband has yet to receive a negative test result so he was not able to witness the birth of their children. It was Sillero’s mom who kept her company during the emergency procedure.
Since the triplets were premature, they were taken to the NICU for monitoring. Baby girl Isabella is the eldest of the three and she weighed 3.11 pounds. Nathaniel came next with 3.7 pounds and the youngest was Adriel, who weighed 2.1 pounds at birth.
The triplets turned one month old on July 4 and they have shown normal growth in that span of time. Sillero already brought Isabella home on Monday, while the two boys still remain at the hospital for further monitoring.
