3 Types of Premed Extracurriculars #SHORTS

As if getting good grades and doing well on the MCAT wasn’t hard enough, you also need to have stellar extracurriculars to get into medical school.

Here’s what I did during college to earn a full-tuition scholarship to a top 15 medical school.

Clinical exposure demonstrates that you understand what it means to be a physician. Although I did minimal physician shadowing before medical school, I volunteered extensively in the emergency department and on an international medical trip.

In terms of undergraduate research, I primarily did basic science research, which included a lot of pipetting, PCR, Western blots and other microbiology techniques; however, I did participate in some clinical research through my volunteer work in the emergency department.

Lastly, personal extracurriculars can help you stand out to admissions committees. The trick is to do what genuinely makes you happy. I competed on a dance team, took on leadership roles in digital art and graphic design, and regularly lifted weights during my downtime.

Maintaining hobbies outside of medicine will also help you deal with stress, create lasting friendships, and ultimately keep you sane during the rigors of your medical training.
