4 Reasons America Has So Few Doctors #SHORTS

Videos
Here are 4 reasons why America has so few doctors. Number one, length of training. The U.S. has one of the longest training pathways to becoming a physician of any developed country. You must complete a 4-year bachelor’s degree, followed by 4 years of medical school and 3 to 7 years of residency. As such, it takes over a decade to train even one physician.

Number two, limited residency spots. The majority of funding for residency programs comes from Medicare and funding has largely been frozen since 1997. As a result, there are far fewer residency positions than fourth-year medical students. This, in turn, greatly limits the number of physicians that can be trained each year.

Number three, limitations on importing doctors. Foreign-trained physicians often face many challenges when it comes to practicing in the United States. As a result, there are many qualified physicians who want to practice here that are unable to do so.

Number four, an aging physician population. According to the AAMC, more than 2 out of every 5 practicing physicians will be over the age of 65 within the next decade. As such, we expect an increasing number of physicians to leave the profession in the coming years.
