Does COLLEGE PRESTIGE Matter for Medical School? #SHORTS

Does college reputation matter for medical school admissions? It’s complicated, but here’s what you need to know. On the one hand, college reputation is low on the priorities list for admissions committees. Factors such as GPA, MCAT, extracurriculars, personal statement, and letters of recommendation are weighted much more heavily and are much better predictors of your competitiveness as an applicant.

In short, a strong applicant is a strong applicant, regardless of where they went to college.

On the other hand, attending a prestigious university can give you an edge over your competition.

If you take two students with identical scores and extracurriculars, the student from the more prestigious university will often be viewed more favorably.

In addition, top universities typically have more resources and opportunities for pre-meds. You’re much more likely to gain research experience with abstracts or publications at a school like Harvard than you are at a small state school.

Similarly, hospital volunteer and clinical opportunities are often easier to find at top institutions that cater to a large number of premeds.

That being said, *you* are the main driver of your success – not your school. Invest in yourself and don’t rely on tertiary factors like prestige to carry your application.
