How to Become a Doctor (High School to Attending Physician) #SHORTS

Videos
Here’s how to become a doctor in the United States. After completing high school, you’ll attend a 4-year university and work towards your bachelor’s degree. You’ll take your prerequisite courses and participate in a variety of extracurriculars including volunteer work, physician shadowing, and research. In the second half of college, you’ll take the MCAT. After that, you’ll apply to medical school and start the next phase of your journey.

Medical school in the U.S. is 4 years long and will grant you the designation of either Doctor of Medicine, MD, or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, DO.

The first two years are spent primarily in the classroom and the last two years are spent primarily in the hospital and clinic. During your fourth year, you’ll apply for residency through the NRMP Match program.

Depending on your chosen specialty, residency will last anywhere from 3-7 years. Your time will be spent seeing patients and you’ll gradually gain more responsibility and autonomy. After residency, subspecialization with fellowship is optional and can add another 1-3 years to your training.

But once you’re done, congratulations, you’re an attending physician and your training is complete! Just take the board exams for your specialty and you’ll be a board-certified doctor or surgeon.
