“Hypersensitivity reactions are exaggerated or inappropriate immune response to benign antigens. It is the immune response and not the antigen that is harmful. An external antigen such as a drug, pollen or food can elicit an inappropriate immune response.

Hypersensitivity Type I is a antibody mediated reaction. It is also called the immediate hypersensitivity reaction because it is fast. An allergic reaction is a type I hypersensitivity reaction and really involves recognition of an antigen by primed IgE immunoglobulins on mast cells.”
