Sleep Deprivation (& What To Do About It) #SHORTS

Videos
There’s a strange culture surrounding sleep. It’s not uncommon to see influencers on social media wearing their sleep deprivation as a badge of honor – a reflection of their dedication to productivity and the “hustle grindset.” But this is an incredibly unhealthy way of looking at sleep.

Sleep deprivation impairs your memory, problem-solving abilities, and fine motor skills – all of which are crucial to maximizing your productivity.

It’s so detrimental to your performance that driving while sleep-deprived has often been compared to driving while drunk.

That being said, there may be times when it’s impossible to get the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep. If you’re a medical student or resident, you certainly know what I mean.

In these situations, there are some things you can do to mitigate the harmful effects of sleep deprivation.

Power naps lasting 15 to 30 minutes have been shown to improve alertness. Furthermore, proper nutrition and hydration have also been shown to help mitigate the effects of sleep deprivation.

Most important, however, is to give yourself time to rest after any kind of sleep deprivation as soon as possible. It generally takes two full nights to recover from one night of sleep impairment, so don’t continue to cut your sleep short.
