Number two is the limited number of training positions. Although we have a shortage of physicians in the U.S., there are still far more applicants than there are medical school positions. In addition, the bottleneck in residency positions due to stagnant Medicare funding further limits new doctors from being trained.
Lastly, number three is the difficult and complicated path to getting into medical school. There’s premed coursework, including weeder courses like organic chemistry, plus research, volunteering, shadowing, clinical experience, and letters of recommendation, and that’s before you even get to the actual application.
Only a small fraction of those who enter college as pre-meds apply to medical school, and of those that apply, only between 31 and 36% matriculate.
Although getting into medical school is tougher now than ever, you can still beat the odds and become a highly competitive applicant.
